The Las Positas College men’s cross country team finished tied for 4th overall at the Lou Vasquez Invitational. The meet took place on Sept. 20 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
There were 13 schools at the meet, including Hartnell College (Salinas), whom the Hawks are starting to develop a friendly rivalry with.
“We ran pretty well. We matched up really well with Hartnell, who killed us two meets ago,” Head coach Steve Navarro said. “It was a very exciting race, and a beautiful day in San Francisco.”
Coach Navarro seems to have some sort of psychic powers.
Before the meet he predicted a strong showing from freshman Abraham Espinoza.
He was right. Espinoza finished with the top time of 21:18.40 for the Hawks and tied for 14th overall in a field of 157 runners.
“Espinoza and (Arthur) Ruvalcaba really came back with strong performances,” Navarro said. “They ran the way we knew the could run.”
Ruvalcaba finished with the 2nd for the Hawks with a time of 21:20.90.
He looks to be emerging as the top dog for the Hawks, having put together a good showing for three straight meets.
“As every race goes by I just feel more and more comfortable,” Ruvalcaba said.
Coach Navarro was pleased with the effort and determination shown by Ruvalcaba at the meet.
The sophomore runner is running 50-60 miles a week and is picking up right where last year’s top runners left off.
“You could see it in his face. He was confident. He ran well,” Navarro said. “After the race he was all smiles, that’s a good thing to see.”
The Hawks next meet will take place on Oct. 5 at the Toro Park Invitational in Salinas.
This is the home of Hartnell College and while they may have the home field advantage, the Hawks hope to spoil the party and out perform them.
“They (Hartnell) know the course already, but we’re gonna try to surprise them,” Navarro said. “We’re going for the upset.”
