Are you ready for some football? Get your gear out. A new season of the National Football League is dawning.
The previous season had a surprising outcome, as the underdog New York Giants were able to capture the Vince Lombardi trophy over the New England Patriots in a rematch of their big game four years ago, Super Bowl XLII.
The Giants’ road to the super bowl was not easy. They barely squeaked into the playoffs, earning a playoff berth on the last week of the season. Once they got into the postseason they were able to run the table by winning three straight games on the road in very tough environments (Atlanta, Green Bay, San Francisco).
For this upcoming season, the oddsmak- ers in Vegas are already crowning a new Super Bowl champion for the upcoming season. As of August 2012, The New England Patriots are the favorites to win it all at 11/2 odds. The Green Bay Packers are right behind with 6/1 odds, followed by the local San Francisco 49ers at 9/1 odds.
As far as California teams go, the 49ers figure to have a very good chance at winning their sixth Super Bowl title. They were one mistake away from reaching the Super Bowl last year and will have nearly their entire 2011 roster back, with some new weapons for quarterback Alex Smith such as Randy Moss and Mario Manningham.
The team across the bay may have a little more work to do. The Oakland Raiders have start- ed fresh with a completely new organization. From new owner to new coaches, their players will have to adjust to a brand new system. With a guy named Peyton Manning and the very strong defense of the Kansas City Chiefs in the division, it will take more than their 2011 record of 8-8 to win the AFC West.
All in all everyone should get their game day rituals going. Get your jerseys out of the closet. It’s football season!
